Rio Linda High School senior Alex Ounmany looked over his high school transcript, reviewing the grades he earned at the four schools he’s attended in as many years.

“I’m really proud of myself,” Ounmany, 18, said. “I’ve never said that. But I am.”

Ounmany has many reasons to feel that way, said Aaron MacMillan, the head counselor at Rio Linda High. MacMillan has seen what happens to students who attend multiple high schools, who live in single-parent households with limited means, who endure tumultuous family situations.

Most don’t end up in MacMillan’s office talking about being days away from high school graduation or their acceptance into a four-year university.

“He’s done an outstanding job,” MacMillan said.

Now, MacMillan is hoping a Twin Rivers Unified School District program called College Bound will help Ounmany and other deserving students make the transition from home to dorms and apartments.
