Unbeknownst to many, household hazardous waste (HHW) should never find its way into residential curbside collection bins. Embrace the opportunity to acquaint yourself with Hazel Haz-Waste, your guide to responsible HHW disposal.

Everyday household items bearing caution or warning labels often harbor chemicals that pose risks to health and the environment. These substances can be dangerous, potentially causing fires or explosions if improperly disposed of in Garbage, Organics, or Recycling carts. Common HHW materials include automotive fluids, various aerosols, batteries, household cleaners, fluorescent lighting, paint, and pesticides.

Hazel Haz-Waste is on a mission to educate residents about collecting and disposing of hazardous materials like old paint, automotive products, pool chemicals, cleaners, and more. She urges you to visit your local HHW drop-off centers, where you can dispose of these items safely and free of charge. Before heading out, confirm that your items are accepted at the chosen facility.

At the North Area Recovery Station (NARS) HHW Facility, residents are allowed to drop off up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of specific HHW items monthly at no cost. The NARS facility also offers a Product Reuse Program, making usable products available for free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Similarly, the Kiefer Landfill Special Waste Facility provides a free service, accepting the same quantity of HHW materials. Additionally, both NARS and Kiefer Landfill cater to the disposal of electronic waste, including various electronic devices, which contain harmful metals.

To ensure safety, it’s crucial to follow specific guidelines when transporting HHW to a drop-off site: use original containers when possible, avoid mixing substances, secure containers to prevent spills, and maintain adequate ventilation during transport.

Hazel Haz-Waste also champions the use of non-hazardous alternatives for everyday tasks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s website offers a myriad of safer options for cleaning and maintenance tasks.

Embark on a journey of responsible waste management with Hazel Haz-Waste at RecycleReboot.com. Dive into valuable resources, engage in enlightening activities, and transform your approach to household waste.
