Twin Rivers Unified Mourns the Passing of Beloved Coach Mike Alberghini

The Twin Rivers Unified School District is deeply saddened by the loss of Mike Alberghini, a cherished mentor, friend, and legendary football coach whose impact extended far beyond the field. Coach Alberghini’s influence was especially felt at Grant Union High School, where he led the varsity football team for an incredible 31 years. Under his guidance, the Pacers became a powerhouse, earning recognition as one of the greatest programs in Sacramento high school football history.

Coach Alberghini devoted 53 years to Twin Rivers Unified as both a teacher and coach, leaving a legacy defined by passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to his students.

“Coach Al had a unique ability to connect with students, see their potential, and inspire them to achieve their very best—not just on the football field but in the classroom and within our community,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Martinez. “He was a mentor, a role model, and a true champion for our kids. He will be profoundly missed, but his legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.”

Beyond his winning record, Coach Alberghini embodied the spirit of Grant Union High School and the Del Paso Heights community. Known as the heart of the Pacers, he gave his all to students, consistently demonstrating care, dedication, and love for his school and neighborhood.

“High school football and Friday Night Lights have lost an icon in Coach Alberghini,” said Grant Union High School Principal Darris Hinson. “The entire Pacer4Life community mourns his passing, and we send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Christine Jefferson, Area 3 school board member, shared a fond memory of Coach Alberghini’s thoughtfulness: “I used to work as an audiovisual materials technician at Grant, and Coach Al would bring me game highlight tapes to help prepare for players heading to college. He cared so much for our students. I’ll never forget how he would pick up kids for Saturday practices and make sure they got home safely. He was truly one in a million, and I will miss his caring spirit.”

Twin Rivers Unified will always honor Coach Alberghini’s legacy of passion, dedication, and love for the game, his family, and the community. His memory will forever inspire the lives he touched.
