Rite Aid Re-Enters Bankruptcy; Closes More Local Stores

Rite Aid to Close Additional Sacramento Area Stores

RIO LINDA, CA (May 6, 2025) – Our local Rite Aid, a familiar spot for many in Rio Linda, continues to operate amidst significant financial restructuring at its corporate level. For the second time in just a few years, Rite Aid Corp. has initiated bankruptcy proceedings.

According to company news releases, this latest move is driven by a plan to sell “substantially all of its assets.” This means Rite Aid is looking for buyers for its prescriptions, pharmacy operations, front-end inventory, and other company holdings.

The company has been clear: any store operations or assets that are not sold during this process will no longer be owned or operated by Rite Aid. Adding to the uncertainty, all Rite Aid distribution centers are slated to close. Individual stores will either eventually close or transition to new ownership in the coming months. This process has already led to changes in our region; since its initial bankruptcy filing in 2023, Rite Aid has shuttered numerous locations throughout the Sacramento area, including its distribution center in Woodland.

What Does This Mean for Our Rio Linda Rite Aid?

The pressing question for many of us is: how will this affect our store here in Rio Linda?

Recently, a list was circulated detailing nearly 1,200 Rite Aid retail leases and company-owned properties across the country that are part of the bankruptcy sale. This list included seventeen locations in the greater Sacramento area. Among those were stores in nearby communities like North Highlands (the company-owned property at 6639 Watt Ave.), Carmichael, and various addresses on Del Paso Road, Norwood Ave., Marconi Ave., and Kiefer Blvd. in Sacramento.

Crucially, as of May 6, 2025, the Rio Linda Rite Aid location has not been explicitly named on these publicly released lists of store leases for sale or company-owned properties being offloaded in the current bankruptcy proceedings.

However, it’s important to understand that the overall situation for Rite Aid remains fluid. With the entire company undergoing such a significant restructuring and asset sale, the long-term future of all Rite Aid stores, including our Rio Linda branch, will ultimately depend on the outcome of these broader sales negotiations.

Rio Linda residents should continue to stay informed and watch for any further announcements from Rite Aid Corp. or potential new owners as this process unfolds. For the time being, the absence of our local store from the immediate sale lists offers a degree of temporary reassurance, but the larger picture for Rite Aid is still developing.
