Hickory Hank’s Last Smoke

GoFundMe launched to keep Hickory Hank’s BBQ open in Rio Linda

The air in Rio Linda had a different scent on Friday, August 15, 2025. It wasn’t just the usual mix of summer heat and dusty roads; it was the bittersweet aroma of hickory smoke from the grill at Hickory Hanks BBQ, a scent that had been a fixture in the community for over four decades. Friday was the last day.

Inside, the rhythm was familiar but tinged with a farewell cadence. Hank, his face a roadmap of smiles and smoke, expertly moved with a practiced grace that only forty years of dedication can teach. By his side, Peter, Lee, Nicole and Heather navigated the busy kitchen and seating area, their smiles warm despite the sadness in their eyes. They weren’t just employees; they were family.

Every customer who came through the door had a story. “I remember you catering my daughter’s wedding,” one man said, his voice thick with emotion. Another recalled his high school graduation party, where Hank’s ribs were the main event. Hank just smiled, shaking hands and offering a few words of thanks.

The flyer had invited the community to come say goodbye, and the community had answered, turning the final day into a spontaneous, heartfelt block party.

As the sun began to set and the last of the ribs were sold, a quiet settled over the place. Hank walked out to the parking lot, wiping his hands on his apron. He looked at the modest building that had been his life’s work. The worn sign, the lingering scent of barbecue—it was all a part of him. He wasn’t leaving because he was tired, but because it was time. Time for a slower pace, for days with his own family and friends.

Hank raised his cup. “To you all,” he said, his voice raspy. “And to this community. It’s been my honor.”

As the last light faded, Hank locked the door of Hickory Hanks BBQ for the very last time. The smell of hickory smoke would soon dissipate from the air, but the flavor of his legacy, and the memories he’d served up, would linger in Rio Linda for generations to come.
