Severe Weather Sheltering & Tips for Staying Cool

As our region prepares for a significant heat wave, several cooling centers are opening to provide a safe, air-conditioned space for community members. These centers are activated to help people find relief from the dangerous temperatures.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for our area from 11 a.m. this Friday until 11 p.m. Saturday. Expect dangerously high temperatures ranging from 95 to 107 degrees, with overnight lows only dropping into the mid-60s and 70s.

This heat is part of a widespread weather event that brings a moderate to major heat risk to several regions, including the Sacramento Valley.

High temperatures can lead to a significant increase in heat-related illnesses. Be extra careful if you’re working or spending time outdoors this weekend.

How to Stay Safe

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks, coffee, or alcohol.
  • Take breaks and stay in the shade or an air-conditioned space whenever you can.
  • Check on others, especially the elderly, children, and those with health conditions.
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car, not even for a minute.

Before You Go

If you’re planning to use a cooling center, it’s a good idea to call 2-1-1 first to confirm capacity. To make it easier for people to get there, Regional Transit is offering free rides to and from all designated centers.
