Knights Ride Corey’s Ground Game to First Win

Rio Linda High School secured its first victory of the season, defeating a previously undefeated Center High School with a final score of 35-15. The Knights’ offense, led by a standout performance from running back Joseph Corey, was too much for the Cougars to handle on Friday night.

Corey was a force on the ground, racking up 143 yards and three touchdowns on just 13 carries. He nearly had a fourth touchdown, but it was called back due to a penalty. Corey’s explosive 67-yard run in the third quarter was a highlight, showcasing the speed and power that led to his impressive yards-per-carry average. The Knights’ offense hit its stride in the third quarter, scoring 19 unanswered points and effectively putting the game out of reach.

But it wasn’t just the offense that shined. The Rio Linda defense put immense pressure on Center’s quarterback, with Jessie Miralrio single-handedly disrupting the Cougars’ passing game with three sacks and causing a fumble. The Knights’ secondary was equally impressive, with cornerback Imara Bell adding two interceptions to his season total, bringing his impressive count to five in just three games. The defense held Center scoreless in the entire second half, allowing the offense to build a commanding lead.

Sophomore quarterback Louis Means also got in on the scoring, running one in himself and throwing a touchdown pass to fellow sophomore Messiah Mahomes.

With this first win of the season, the Knights improve their record to 1-2. The loss marks the first of the season for the Cougars, who now sit at 2-1.

Looking ahead, Rio Linda will face Foothill at the all-new Negri Field at Foothill High School at 7:00 p.m. this Friday.
