Remembering John Boyd Rhoads: A Life Built on Hard Work and Community

John Boyd Rhoads, a longtime resident of Elverta and a familiar face in the Rio Linda community, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, in Newcastle, California, following a courageous two-year health battle. He was 82.

A Life Rooted in Elverta

Born in Dos Palos in 1943, Boyd spent his early childhood in Penryn before his family moved to Elverta. He grew up in the home his father built—the same home where Boyd would eventually raise his own family and reside for nearly his entire life until 2023. A proud 1961 graduate of Highlands High School, Boyd’s work ethic was evident early on as a teenager working at Donsing Ranch.

A Builder and an Enthusiast

Boyd’s professional life was dedicated to construction. His craftsmanship can be seen across the country in the apartments, luxury homes, hotels, and Tower Records locations he helped build.

Closer to home, Boyd was a man of many passions. He was an early member of the Cherrieters Car Club, often seen at classic car shows proudly displaying his ’64 T-Bird. During the 1980s and 90s, he was a dedicated and active member of the Lions Club of Rio Linda, giving back to the community he loved.

Family and Legacy

Boyd is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Fran (Nebel) Rhoads. He leaves behind his daughters, LeeAnna Bomgardner (Kurtis) and Kim Rogers (Bob); his grandchildren, Nick Rhoads-Romero, Emily Anne Guerrero, Emily Deann Bomgardner, and Jordan Chamberlin; and his great-grandchildren, Annelise, Lewis, and Benjamin.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Zachary Rogers, his parents, two sisters, one brother, and many dear friends.
