California Gubernatorial Recall Election set for September 14

A drive to recall Governor Gavin Newsom will go to a special vote on September 14, a state official declared on Thursday after the state’s top election official certified a recall petition.

The Lieutenant Governor has issued a Proclamation for a special statewide election on September 14, 2021. For more information on the upcoming election, please visit the Secretary of State’s website at: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/upcoming-elections/2021-ca-gov-recall

For key election dates and candidate filing information, please visit the Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections website at: https://elections.saccounty.gov/ElectionInformation/Pages/InfoUpcomingElect.aspx.

The race to remove Newsom 2-1/2 years into his four-year term looks to be chaotic, as several high-profile candidates – including transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner – have said they will run to replace him.

Sacramento County is a Voter’s Choice Act (VCA) County. All currently registered voters will receive their ballot in the mail and may mail it back, drop it in an official pink Ballot DropBox or vote in person at a Vote Center. In-person voting locations and drop box locations will be added to the Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections website as they are confirmed.

Newsom has framed the recall effort as a power grab by people who have little other chance at gaining statewide office in California, where the Republican party represents only a quarter of registered voters.

If more than 50 percent choose to end Newsom’s term, then the replacement candidate with the most votes to succeed him, even if less than a majority, wins and becomes the new governor.

California law does not limit how many candidates can run in a recall. According to CalMatters, 55 individuals have already filed a statement of intention to run.
