August Egg Company of Hilmar, CA, has issued a massive recall of approximately 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs due to potential Salmonella contamination. This is especially important for Rio Linda residents to know, as these eggs were distributed to several local grocery stores, including Raley’s and Food 4 Less.
Salmonella can cause serious, and sometimes fatal, infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, it can lead to more severe illnesses.
Which Eggs Are Affected?
The recalled eggs were distributed from February 3, 2025, through May 15, 2025, with sell-by dates from March 4, 2025, to June 4, 2025. They were sold under various brand names, including:
- Clover
- First Street
- Nulaid
- O Organics
- Marketside
- Raley’s
- Simple Truth
- Sun Harvest
- Sunnyside
How to Identify Recalled Eggs
Check your egg cartons for a plant code of P-6562 or CA5330 printed on one side of the carton. Look for Julian Dates (a three-digit number representing the day of the year) between 32 to 126. These codes indicate the eggs are part of the recall.

In California and Nevada, these recalled eggs were sold at numerous retail locations, including:
- Raley’s
- Food 4 Less
- Save Mart
- FoodMaxx
- Lucky
- Smart & Final
- Safeway
- Ralphs
- Walmart (with sell-by dates ranging from March 4, 2025, to June 19, 2025)

If you find that you have eggs matching the recalled description, do not consume them. Return the eggs to the place of purchase for a full refund.
August Egg Company is currently not selling fresh shell eggs and has been diverting their eggs to an egg-breaking plant for pasteurization, which kills potential foodborne pathogens.
