Yard Sign 2014Sacramento, CA, June 2, 2015 – Sacramento County is wrapping up a multi-year process to update its Zoning Code and Design Guidelines. This final public review draft packaged together to form the new Development Code is now available on the Zoning Code Update webpage. This draft shows changes from the October 2014 draft incorporating direction from the Board of Supervisors during public meetings between October 2014 and May 6, 2015.

The new Development Code offers a more efficient development process. It also guides Sacramento County toward a future with more attractive commercial areas, a greater number of high quality buildings, walkable and safe neighborhoods, and increased use of drought-tolerant landscaping.

The Development Code update is scheduled for final adoption at the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors meeting on July 22, 2015 at 2 pm in the Sacramento County Board Chambers located at 700 H Street, First Floor.

The Department of Community Development set three main goals for the update.

  1. Provide business and user friendly practices that promote economic development and streamline the entitlement process, offering flexibility while ensuring appropriate community review.
  2. Create Design Guidelines and Development Standards that achieve higher standards for the quality of both residential and commercial buildings.
  3. Promote low-impact development, active design, walkable communities, energy efficiency and water conservation.

During the past three years, the Department has presented the Development Code update to a variety of stakeholders, community groups, Community Planning Advisory Councils, business organizations and others at more than 80 public meetings. Based on feedback from the public and the direction of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Community Development has made many updates to the Public Review Draft between February 2014 and June 2015.

“We’d like to thank the many stakeholders and community members who shared their concerns and comments with us,” said Sacramento County Planning Director Leighann Moffitt. “They have all helped us in our efforts to make Sacramento County a wonderful place to live, work and play.”
