Board Approves $1.7 M to Keep Homeless Housing

Last week, the Sacramento County Office of the Registrar of Voters published the certified results of the 2024 General Election, providing clarity on several races and measures directly impacting the Rio Linda-Elverta community. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of voter participation and key outcomes.

Voter Turnout: A Strong Showing in Rio Linda-Elverta

The Rio Linda-Elverta area demonstrated robust civic engagement, with 71.4% of registered voters participating across six local precincts. Although this figure slightly lagged behind Sacramento County’s overall turnout of 75.15%, it underscores the area’s commitment to shaping its governance and future.

Rio Linda-Elverta Community Water District Election

The election for three open seats on the Rio Linda-Elverta Community Water District (RLECWD) board featured a mix of familiar faces and a new addition:

  • Jason Green, a current board member, secured 20% of the vote to maintain his seat.
  • Chris Gifford, another incumbent, retained his position with 17% of the vote.
  • Maria Liverett, a political newcomer, earned 19% of the vote, capturing the third available seat and bringing fresh energy and perspective to the board.

However, the race wasn’t without drama. Longtime board member Mary Harris Garrison, who spent over two decades at the RLECWD, narrowly lost her re-election bid by fewer than 100 votes. Garrison’s defeat marks the close of a significant chapter for the district, leaving many in the community optimistic about the potential for fresh ideas and positive change moving forward.

SMUD Director Race: Rob Kerth Retains His Seat

Incumbent Rob Kerth emerged victorious in the race for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) board, garnering 55% of the vote. Kerth, who recently addressed residents during a Rio Linda-Elverta Neighborhood Association meeting, emphasized his focus on maintaining reliable energy services and investing in sustainable energy solutions. His re-election signals continued community trust in his leadership.

Measure J: Big Wins for Elverta Schools

Measure J, a funding initiative aimed at upgrading infrastructure in the Elverta Joint Elementary School District, passed decisively, gaining widespread community support. The measure will finance vital projects, including:

  • Modernizing classrooms
  • Upgrading electrical systems
  • Replacing aging roofs
  • Renovating restrooms
  • Enhancing health, safety, and accessibility features

These upgrades are anticipated to significantly enhance learning environments for students and working conditions for teachers and staff.

Measure O: Strengthening Fire Protection

Voters approved Measure O by a commanding margin of 39%, signaling strong support for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District’s modernization efforts. Funds from this bond measure will go toward:

  • Updating and expanding fire stations
  • Purchasing advanced firefighting equipment
  • Enhancing emergency response capabilities

The measure’s passage ensures the fire district is better equipped to address the needs of the growing community, reflecting a collective prioritization of safety and preparedness.

Looking Ahead: A Community Engaged in Its Future

The 2024 General Election results highlight a community actively involved in shaping its governance and infrastructure. With a mix of returning leaders and new voices on the RLECWD board, as well as approved measures that promise substantial upgrades to schools and emergency services, Rio Linda and Elverta are poised for meaningful progress in the years ahead.

This election cycle underscores the importance of local participation and collaboration, ensuring the community’s evolving needs are met with thoughtful, impactful solutions.
