The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed that West Nile virus (WNV) is officially present in our region. Three dead birds, including two Northern Mockingbirds found near Antelope and one White-tailed Kite from Elk Grove, have tested positive for the virus. These are the first confirmed cases of WNV in birds this season.
“Finding the first positive birds is always significant because it serves as an early warning sign for West Nile virus activity,” said Gary Goodman, District Manager. “It confirms the virus is present in our region, helps us identify areas where infected mosquitoes may be found, and provides insight into where human cases could emerge later in the season.”
This news follows earlier reports of WNV-positive mosquito samples found in both Sacramento and Yolo counties just a few weeks ago. While the virus activity has been slow to start this year, the hotter temperatures we’re expecting in the coming days and weeks could accelerate mosquito breeding and the spread of the virus.
What You Can Do: Report Dead Birds and Protect Yourself
Your help is crucial in tracking and controlling West Nile virus. If you find a dead bird, especially crows, jays, or magpies (which are particularly susceptible), please report it to the California Department of Public Health hotline at 877-WNV-BIRD (877-968-2473). While not every bird will be collected for testing, your reports provide vital information for surveillance and control efforts.
In response to these detections, the District will be increasing mosquito trapping and surveillance in our area to pinpoint where mosquitoes might be breeding.
