First West Nile Virus Detected Near Rio Linda, Residents Urged to Take Precautions

Warm Temperatures bring Mosquitoes

Rio Linda, Ca.—The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announced today the season’s first mosquito sample testing positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) was collected right in our backyard – from Gibson Ranch in Elverta, in Sacramento County.

“As we expected, the very warm weather we’ve had recently increased the number of mosquitoes and accelerated virus activity. It’s important for residents to take these findings seriously and do everything they can to protect themselves. Summer is around the corner, and as more people enjoy outdoor activities, it’s important to remember that the best protection against mosquito bites is an effective insect repellent.”

Gary Goodman, District Manager

Residents are also strongly encouraged to report dead birds, neglected pools, and any other mosquito problems they encounter.

This local detection of WNV serves as a critical reminder that the virus is present in our community. While this is the first positive sample in Sacramento County this year, other areas of California, including Alameda and Santa Clara counties and several in Southern California, have also begun reporting WNV activity. Last year, California saw 131 confirmed human cases and 12 fatalities from the disease.

In response to this finding, the District will be stepping up its mosquito trapping and monitoring efforts in the area around Gibson Ranch to pinpoint breeding sources. Targeted ground spraying may also be conducted to quickly reduce the adult mosquito population.

For the latest information on District activities and to sign up for email notifications about upcoming mosquito treatments in your zip code, visit www.FIGHTtheBITE.net and navigate to “Spray Notifications.”

2025 West Nile Virus Activity Update:

  • Sacramento County: 1 mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile Virus to date.
  • Yolo County: No activity has been registered so far.
