Well, friends, there’s no sense in ignoring the elephant in the room—it’s been a bit of a different vibe around the halls of Rio Linda High this past week. With the ongoing Twin Rivers teacher strike entering its second week, things are anything but “business as usual.” But if there’s one thing we know about this town, it’s that we don’t let the scoreboard stop us from playing the game.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to tip my cap to the folks behind the scenes. Principal Diedre Barlow and the entire administrative team have been working double-time to make sure our kids have a safe place to land every morning. From coordinating substitutes to making sure the lunch bells still ring, they’re doing a heck of a job maintaining some normalcy for the students. And part of that normalcy? Keeping the lights on at the fields and in the gyms so our Knights can compete.
So, let’s take a look at the week ahead, because these student-athletes have been practicing hard, and they deserve a full set of bleachers.
Monday, March 9: Opening Serves and Away Innings
We’re hitting the ground running today. Boys Volleyball is holding down the fort at home against Casa Roble. JV starts at 5:00 PM, and Varsity follows at 6:00 PM. If you’ve got a free hour, get over there and make some noise—the gym echo is better when it’s full of fans.
Over on the dirt, our Baseball boys are loading up the bus for a trip to Dixon. Both JV and Varsity are looking to start their week with a “W” at 4:15 PM.
Tuesday, March 10: Softball in the Spotlight
Tuesday is a big one for the Softball team. They’ll be hosting Chavez right here at home. JV starts the afternoon at 4:30 PM, but you’ll want to stick around for the Varsity game at 6:30 PM. There’s just something about a night game that feels right, isn’t there?
Wednesday, March 11: Baseball Comes Home
After their Monday road trip, the Baseball crew returns to Rio Linda to host Dixon. It’s a 4:00 PM start for JV and a 6:30 PM first pitch for Varsity. Let’s show Dixon how we do things in the 95673.
Thursday, March 12: The Busy Thursday Shuffle
Thursday is a real “choose your own adventure” for sports fans. We’ve got Knights competing all over the place:
- Boys Golf: Home vs. Sutter at 3:00 PM. (A perfect walk in the park, if you ask me).
- Co-Ed Tennis: Hosting Dixon at 4:00 PM.
- Swimming: Taking the plunge away at El Camino at 4:00 PM.
- Softball: Heading out to Sutter for a 4:30 PM JV/Varsity showdown.
Friday, March 13: Friday Night Spikes
It might be Friday the 13th, but we’re looking for some good luck in the gym. Boys Volleyball is home against Wheatland, with JV at 5:00 PM and Varsity at 6:00 PM. Meanwhile, Baseball heads back to Dixon at 4:15 PM to settle the score.
Saturday, March 14: Track & Field Bright and Early
For those who like their sports with a side of morning coffee, our Track & Field stars are headed to the Crump Invitational in Dixon. The action starts at 8:45 AM. It’s a great chance to see some of the fastest feet in the district.
At the end of the day, these games are about the kids and the community that supports them. We’re proud of our teachers, we’re proud of our administrators like Principal Barlow, and we’re especially proud of these Knights.
