While measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, recent outbreaks nationwide and globally remind us that this highly contagious disease is still a threat. With international travel becoming more common, it’s crucial for Rio Linda residents to understand the risks and ensure their families are protected.

Why Vaccination Matters:

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is your best defense against measles. Most U.S. cases originate from international travel, so if you’re planning a trip abroad, make sure you and your family’s vaccinations are up-to-date.

How Measles Spreads:

  • Measles is extremely contagious. It spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.
  • The virus can linger in the air for hours.
  • You can spread measles before you even know you’re sick.

Measles is Serious:

Measles can lead to serious complications, including hospitalization, long-term illness, and even death. Symptoms appear 7-14 days after exposure and include:

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Watery eyes
  • A rash that appears 3-5 days later

If you suspect measles, don’t go directly to a clinic or hospital. Call your healthcare provider first. This helps prevent the spread of the virus.

Vaccination Information:

  • The MMR vaccine is safe and highly effective.
  • Two doses provide 97% protection against measles.
  • Unvaccinated individuals have a 90% chance of getting infected if exposed.
  • California requires MMR vaccines for children attending childcare and public schools.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

  • Children: Two doses, the first at 12-15 months and the second at 4-6 years.
  • Infants traveling internationally: Infants 6 months and older need one dose prior to travel.
  • Older children, college students, and adults: Ensure you are up to date.

Protect Rio Linda:

With measles cases on the rise, check your family’s vaccination records.
