More Local Rite Aid Closures Announced

Rite Aid, the embattled pharmacy chain, this week announced plans to close an additional 151 stores. This follows an earlier announcement this month of 163 closures nationwide. These moves come as Rite Aid navigates its latest bankruptcy filing, aiming for a “strategic and value-maximizing sale process for substantially all of its assets.”

While many of these newly announced closures are in the Northeast, Rite Aid will be closing more stores in California, Washington, and Idaho. For Rio Linda residents, this raises important questions about the future of our local Rite Aid store.

Rite Aid has been struggling financially, having already filed for bankruptcy in late 2023, which led to over 800 store closures. Despite emerging from that bankruptcy in September, financial challenges have persisted, leading to this second bankruptcy filing in May.

Adding to the complexity, Rite Aid also announced on May 15 that it’s entering agreements with major pharmacy players like CVS, Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger, and Giant Eagle to buy the pharmacy assets of more than 1,000 Rite Aid stores across the country.

Your Rio Linda Rite Aid is NOT on the Closure List.

The local Rite Aid pharmacy at 6420 Rio Linda Blvd is not listed for closure. Unfortunately, the Rite Aid at 6639 Watt Ave. in North Highlands, and the Rite Aid at 4300 Elverta Road in Antelope, are on the confirmed list of stores closing in California.

6639 Watt Avenue is in the Ross shopping Center at the corner of Watt and Elkhorn, while 4300 Elverta Road is at the corner of Elverta and Walerga, near the Winco and Bel Air food stores.

If you rely on one of these Rite Aid locations for your prescriptions or other pharmacy needs, you’ll want to make arrangements to transfer your prescriptions soon. Many pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens, can assist with this process.
