The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is rolling out a new design for driver’s licenses and identification cards, and you might see them starting today. The new cards feature updated security measures and a fresh look that highlights California’s natural beauty.
What’s New?
- Fresh Design: The new cards will showcase iconic California landmarks, including redwood forests, poppies, and the coastline.
- Enhanced Security: To prevent counterfeiting, the new cards include advanced security features, such as a digital security signature in one of the barcodes on the back of the card.
- Updated Technology: The magnetic stripe on the back of the cards will be removed.
According to DMV Director Steve Gordon, “The new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline.”
What You Need to Know
Your current driver’s license or ID card is still valid until its expiration date. There is no need to rush out and get a new one just for the updated design. The new cards will be issued as you renew your existing license or ID.

The cost for the new cards remains the same:
- Driver’s License: $45
