ROCKLIN – A North Highlands man and woman are facing felony charges following a grocery store theft that Rocklin Police are calling a “charcuterie caper.”
Donald Rodriguez, 30, and Sarah Roof, 25, both of North Highlands, were taken into custody last week following an investigation into the theft of meat products from a Rocklin Safeway.
The Incident
According to a statement released by the Rocklin Police Department, the incident occurred when Rodriguez allegedly “stuffed” his pants with unpaid meat inside the store.
While retail theft is often classified as a misdemeanor depending on the value of goods taken, authorities say Rodriguez’s legal history significantly escalated the charges. At the time of the theft, Rodriguez was on active parole and was wearing a court-ordered GPS monitoring device.
The Arrest
Rocklin Police’s Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) Unit, with assistance from Parole agents, tracked the pair to North Highlands where they were arrested.
Police officials noted that Rodriguez has “prior qualifying convictions,” which turned the theft into a felony offense.
“Not Worth the Bacon”
In a social media release regarding the arrest, the Rocklin Police Department used a touch of humor to highlight the severity of the consequences for what started as a shoplifting incident.
“Donald’s bail? A cool $135,000, plus a no-bail parole hold,” the department wrote. “All stemming from a decision that definitely wasn’t worth the bacon.”
Sarah Roof was also arrested on multiple felony charges related to the incident.
