Rio Linda Bridge Replacement and Main Avenue Realignment Project

Rio Linda Bridge Replacement and Main Avenue Realignment Project

There have been many questions about the Main Avenue bridge replacement project. I’ve gathered this information from the City of Sacramento planning website for the information of our community.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Rio Linda Boulevard Bridge Replacement and Main Avenue Realignment Project is located near the intersection of Rio Linda Boulevard and Main Avenue. The existing bridge is a two-lane, four-span reinforced concrete slab (built in 1937) located just south of the intersection of Main Avenue and Rio Linda Boulevard. The Rio Linda Boulevard/Main Avenue Intersection currently has three legs with all-way stop control. In its existing condition, Main Avenue ties into Rio Linda Boulevard at a skewed angle. The existing structure over Magpie Creek is considered functionally obsolete and qualifies for replacement through the federally funded Highway Bridge Program. The new bridge will be located further south on Rio Linda Boulevard. This will allow Main Avenue to be realigned and intersect Rio Linda Boulevard at a perpendicular angle.  Additionally, the intersection will be widened to provide sidewalks, curb ramps, turn pockets, bike lanes, crosswalks, and traffic signalization. Two new bud stops and bike/pedestrian connections to the Sacramento Northern Bike Trail will also be constructed with this project.

BENEFITS

The Rio Linda Boulevard Bridge Replacement Project will provide improved traffic operations, enhanced safety, and provide improved access to the Sacramento Northern Bike Trail. The project will replace the existing functionally obsolete bridge and the new structure will meet the Central Valley Flood Protection Board (CVFPB) hydraulic requirements. Rio Linda Blvd and Main Avenue will be updated to the current City standard cross section with 11′ traveled lanes, 6’ Class II bike lanes/shoulder, and 6’ foot sidewalks. The bridge will also be constructed to a width which will accommodate the 2035 General Plan buildout of Rio Linda Boulevard.

COSTS AND FUNDING

The estimated total construction cost is $5.6 million. This project will be funded with Federal Highway Bridge Program (HBP) funds, Community Development Block Grant funds provided through the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, and local transportation funds.

SCHEDULE

The project is expected to be advertised in Fall/Winter 2018 and construction is scheduled through 2020.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

A community open house was held in June 2013 to share information and receive input from community members. Post cards were mailed to over 800 local residents and businesses. In addition, notification flyers were sent via e‐mail to vicinity businesses, community groups, neighborhood associations, and interested individuals. A press release was coordinated through and distributed by the City of Sacramento, Department of Public Works.
