Y’know, something happened this morning that really bothered me. It’s not something that would happen anywhere else, but because of the strange alignment of I street and Elkhorn Blvd. in front of Rio Linda High School I see it happening all the time.

In the morning and afternoon, parents often turn from eastbound Elkhorn onto westbound I Street to pick up the youngins at RL Junior High (or whatever they’re calling it today).

I street, and the inlet from Elkhorn are both very narrow. Generally, there’s plenty of room to make the turn IF there’s no-one coming west on I Street. In the mornings and afternoons, when traffic picks up, often times there’ll be another vehicle coming west on I intending to turn onto WB Elkhorn.

Listen… If you’re that guy… if you’re coming west on I street and you see someone turning from Elkhorn, give them some room! If you pull all the way up to the intersection, you block the traffic from Elkhorn. Common sense should tell you that it makes a lot more sense, and is much more safe for you to stop short on I street and let the traffic finish the U-turn, rather than blocking the intersection and causing the Elkhorn traffic to STOP in the middle of Elkhorn Blvd… a situation I would wish on nobody.

Also, knowing that traffic is going to be turning onto I street at that point, go up to the next outlet! There’s 3 exits from I street to Elkhorn at that point and everyone wants to use the first one. If you’re turning onto Elkhorn, drive the extra 75 yards and make the turn there.

(It would be nice if the county could fix the Folsom lake sized potholes at the second inlet. It really would. I’d bet $100 that potholes of that size wouldn’t last as long almost anywhere else.)

Use your head… that’s all I’m saying. I don’t want anyone getting run over by a gasoline tanker on Elkhorn because Mister Fiero Guy can’t be bothered to wait.

  1. I had to look at mapquest to see the I st that you are talking about.. That street is still called Elkhorn. I like to call it the HS frontage rd.. but you are right! some people have no common sence ORrather Consideration for other peple it what it really is! .. NOW Dropping HS kids off – I have a problem with people driving into the office lot and instead of pulling in and moving to the right (at the curb) the inconsiderates STOP right as the come in off the street and Block both lanes to drop thier kid off cars line up behind them causeing a traffic jam as thier kid is getting thier jacket and fixing there backpack just right before closing the car door .. OMG I guess some people are just Breed that way!!!!

  2. I guess it doesn’t -really- have a name… frontage road is good, but if you look just east of there, I street lines up perfectly, and I remember when Elkhorn and I street ran side by side. I still call it I street.

You’re right… a little common sense and courtesy would go a long way.

  3. Each of you bring up interesting thoughts – ignorant drivers; I Street[ and, kids dropped off for school. I live at the end of I Street @ Dry Creek & Elkhorn, so I receive my share of ignorant drivers who are dropping off their kids for school. The parents often block my driveway as I am backing out and going somewhere – I am usually in a rush and I find them blocking my driveway very annoying. One Monday morning I was moving my trash cans and a parent came speeding up the street. I told him to slow down 3 times and he looked at me and pretended he didn’t know what I was saying… then he burned out and left. I have chickens and ducks and these people would frequently run over and kill a duck. When this guy looked at me and burned out, I called the school and told them if they didn’t fix this problem, I would bring over my next dead duck and out it on the principal’s desk.

In the afternoon there will be several kids waiting for a ride…honestly, I don;t want them hanging out in front of my house and possibly breaking in when no one is home. Sometimes they arrive as early as lunch time. I have always considered the frontage road to be I Street BEFORE the Elkhorn improvements. Getting in there at times can be awkward or dangerous. Driving like a fool in front of my house can be dangerous, too. Any suggestions?

Right now my left foot in broken and in a cast that extends to my knee. What I have discovered in the crosswalk at Front St and M St. is there are almost NO drivers in RIo Linda who will give the pedestrian the right-of-wy. I could almost feae for my life crossing Rio Linda streets.

    Any suggestions?

  4. I also live on Elkhorn Boulevard and drivers think they are on a racetrack. I live where Elkhorn goes into one lane toward the airport, right there. It is just like a racetrack. Every driver is afraid the guy might get in front of him or something, so they go minimum 65 mph through here. So Dangerous. Anyway, recently I was going eastbound Elkhorn just over the bridge before the high school. Traffic was flowing, not real busy, but flowing. And right in front of us, a car going the wrong way–coming at us. That car made us all stop and it continued like nothing happened. Then it made a u-turn, went up to the light at Elkorn and Dry Creek and made another u-turn to go westbound on Elkhorn. Still curious how she got on wrong side of divided Elkhorn Boulevard. Maybe she was blind, or really did not know that she was driving against traffic. Thank God nobody hit her head on!
