Rio Linda Visions meeting notes 2/8/2016

The Rio Linda/Elverta Visions Committee is an ad hoc, grassroots community organization who are committed to improving the quality of life for our community, create a positive environment for business in our community, and foster cooperation between all local organizations. We met on February 2nd for our monthly meeting.

  • Archway lighting
    • Jim Lane from Aerial Lift Co. stopped by to update the group on the archway lighting. A new controller for the north lights has been purchased along with a dawn-to-dusk power controller, and will be installed soon to replace the malfunctioning controller currently in place. Once the new controller is installed, it will allow the lights to change colors consistently. John Todd is the “Keeper of the Lights” and will be able to program colors to correspond with events and holidays.
  • Rio Linda Food Closet
    • Brenda Conover reports that last month, the Rio Linda Food Closet fed 362 people, including 36 homeless in our area.
    • The Food Closet is working out of the now-empty First Southern Baptist church at Elkhorn and Rio Linda Blvd. They need to find a new location, as the church property won’t be available in the near future.
    • The Food Closet has been insistent with the County that someone needs to come out and work with the homeless in our area. The County has been dropping the ball.
    • Social workers will be at the food closet next week, and the County has committed them to being there twice a month.
    • Food closet is asking for mental health workers twice a month, and Steps Forward monthly.
    • They will appreciate donations of plastic grocery bags before the County imposes the ban in July 2016.
  • Bike Trail extension
    • Kris McFunstigate is working with the County to extend the Sacramento Northern Bike Trail to the county line, past Elverta Road. Currently playing email tag.
  • Christmas Parade
    • Tabitha Worth is working with the American Legion and Rio Linda Little League to kickstart a new Christmas Parade for Rio Linda.
    • She will attend Chamber of Commerce meeting on 2/10 to coordinate holiday events.
    • Tentative date: December 10th, 2016.
  • Communications
    • John Todd has the website online at rlevisions.riolindaonline.com, and is adding to it often.
    • Charlea Moore will get the collected email addresses to John for creation of an email mailing list.
    • John Todd will create “Certificates of Appreciation” to say thanks to local supporting businesses. A-1 Storage will provide the printing and frames.
  • Mar-Val Plaza
    • Mike Huiras noted earlier in the month that Sacramento County had engaged property owner Aiad Samuel in an official hearing. No results have been reported.
    • John Todd will contact Lori Moss, ‎Community Development Director at Sacramento County, and ask her to attend our next meeting to provide an update on MarVal Plaza and the promised community clean-up day.
  • Rio Linda PBID
    • Charlea Moore proposed investigating the possibility of forming a PBID for Rio Linda. She will invite people from the Watt Ave PBID to the May mixer to discuss the details with local business.
  • IMG_20160208_203220Misc. business
    • Larry George and Ed Valencia from the Rio Linda Lions Club stopped by to show the group the plans for new “Welcome to Rio Linda” signs. They are soliciting donations to complete them. The mock-up looked a lot like the bike trail arches, and very attractive.
    • It was noted that the 145 Club has closed.
    • The new lighting at the Exxon station was noted and appreciated.
    • The I&C Panaderia is moving from their current location at MarVal Plaza to the old Archway Pizza building on Rio Linda Blvd.
    • CPAC is scheduled for 2/24/16. John Todd will contact Keri Blaskoski, Sacramento County Neighborhood Service Manager, to find out why there’s been no meeting in five months.
    • Rio Linda Country Faire planning meeting is scheduled for Monday, 2/15.
    • Friends of Dry Creek Parkway has scheduled a trash clean-up for Sunday February 21, weather permitting.
    • Creek Week begins April 9th.
