Rio Linda’s Quarter-Midget Mecca: A Legacy on Wheels
Jeff Gordon on his retirement tour, June 20th 2015.

Hidden behind the unassuming facade of Rio Linda High School lies a little-known gem of motorsports history. The Roy Hayer Memorial Race Track, home to the Capitol Quarter Midget Association (CQMA), has been churning out racing talent for decades. This tiny dirt oval, nestled amidst a grove of shade trees, is more than just a track; it’s a breeding ground for future racing stars.

Since its inception, the track has been a proving ground for countless young drivers eager to hone their skills. The roar of quarter-midget engines has become synonymous with Rio Linda, a testament to the track’s enduring appeal. The CQMA, the track’s governing body, has cultivated a family-oriented atmosphere, making it an ideal place for kids to learn the ropes of racing.

The track’s rich history is intertwined with the evolution of quarter-midget racing itself. Countless champions have emerged from its dusty confines, their names etched into the sport’s lore. Names like Gordon, Larson, McMahan, Vassar, Gurney, and Bliss, who ended up driving in NASCAR, IndyCar, USAC, and The World Of Outlaws… it’s undisputable that the track has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of many renowned racers.

Beyond producing racing champions, the track has fostered a strong sense of community. Families flock to the races, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with the smell of racing fuel and the excitement of competition. The CQMA has been instrumental in organizing races, maintaining the track, and ensuring the safety of participants.

As the sun sets on another day of racing at Rio Linda, the track’s legacy shines brightly. It’s where dreams are born, skills are honed, and champions are made. The Roy Hayer Memorial Race Track is more than just a dirt oval; it’s a cornerstone of the local community and a testament to the enduring spirit of competition.

The track’s historical significance in the broader landscape of quarter-midget racing cannot be overstated. It’s a place where legends are made, and the next generation of racing stars is waiting in the wings.
