Yesterday, The Sacramento City Council approved the renaming of a Natomas skate park in honor of Tyre Nichols. Nichols, a graduate of Rio Linda High School, died in January after being beaten by Memphis Police officers following a traffic stop. 

He was 29 years old.

The Sacramento city council voted 9-0 to rename Regency Community State Park to Tyre Nichols Skate Park. 

Nichols was a member of the local Sacramento skateboarding community who visited Regency Park often.

The vote also established the Tyre Nichols Skate Park Improvements Project, which includes an appropriation of $20,000 from park impact fees. A Bronze plaque will also be installed at the park in recognition of Nichols.

Sacramento City District 1Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan said the city is partnering with Tony Hawk’s “The Skatepark Project” to make upgrades at the park.
