Get your sandbags now to protect your property—including a local option at Sac Metro Fire Station #116 in Elverta
As a winter storm approaches and heavy rains are expected, the Sacramento County Department of Water Resources (DWR) has activated three self-serve sandbag locations.
This is a critical resource for those of us living in unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, which includes Rio Linda and Elverta, who may be at risk of localized flooding.
Closest and County Sandbag Locations
The most convenient location for our community is Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Station #116, which is specifically highlighted for Rio Linda/Elverta residents by the County.
| Location Name | Address | Notes for Residents |
| Sac Metro Fire Station #116 | 7995 Elwyn Ave. (Elverta) | This is our closest location |
| Branch Center | 3847 Branch Center Rd. | County’s main location. |
| Orangevale Community Center | 6826 Hazel Ave. | Located in Orangevale. |
Important Details:
- Self-Serve Only: The County supplies the sand and bags, but you must bring your own shovel to fill them.
- Limit: There is a 20-bag limit per visit to ensure all residents have access.
- Replace Old Bags: If you have sandbags from previous years, officials advise replacing them, as the bags deteriorate over time.
Prepare Now to Prevent Flooding
In addition to stocking up on sandbags, residents are strongly encouraged to take these proactive steps:
- Clear Storm Drains: Before the rain starts, make sure the storm drains near your home are clear of leaves, trash, and other debris to help street water flow freely and prevent localized flooding.
- Monitor Water Levels: If you live near local waterways like Dry Creek, you can monitor rising streams in the unincorporated areas using the County’s ALERT system: https://sacflood.org/home.php
If you live within an incorporated city (like Sacramento, Citrus Heights, or Folsom), please check with your city’s public works department for their specific sandbag information.
