September is National Recovery Month

September is National Recovery Month

Each September, National Recovery Month is celebrated as a national observance to promote and support new evidenced-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members who make recovery possible. It also takes place to increase awareness and educate people about how substance use and mental health services can help people and their families to live healthy and rewarding lives.

Kicking off with the 30th annual Recovery Happens Event on Sept. 7, National Recovery Month shares the message of hope through treatment and recovery. All month long, Sacramento County Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Services celebrates the fact that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

“National Recovery Month is a time for recognition of the strength and resilience of those in recovery from substance use and mental health as well as the families who support those in recovery,” said, Lori Miller, Division Manager for Sacramento County Division of Behavioral Health Services.

The 2022 National Recovery Month theme, “Every Person, Every Family, Every Community,” reminds people in recovery and those who support them that no one is alone in the journey. Recovery belongs to all of us.

How to Get Involved with Sacramento County Recovery Month and Get Help

  • National Addiction Professionals Day will be celebrated on Sept. 20, 2022. This day aims to celebrate the vital people who make a difference and their powerful work in the field of addiction on a daily basis. This day marks the 30th anniversary.
  • Wear purple on Sept. 30, International Recovery Day. Purple is the color symbolizing addiction recovery.

  • Attend Sacramento County Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board meetings and learn more about the work happening related to Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Services.  The board meets virtually from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month.
  • Share your experiences with recovery at Sacramento County Substance Use Prevention and Treatment Services public speaking events. For information email us at DHS-SUPT@saccounty.net or call (916) 875-2050.
  • Get help for yourself, a friend or a family member who is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction. Sacramento County provides alcohol and drug treatment services that include outpatient treatment, medication-assisted treatment, residential treatment, detoxification and perinatal services.
