Storm preparation tips from SMUD

SMUD

Please review this important information and prepare for tonight’s storm
We’re prepared for the storm expected to hit the Sacramento region tonight, and we want you to be prepared too. Please review the following tips and information as soon as possible:

Prepare an emergency kit
Begin by putting together a basic emergency kit that includes:

  1. a fully charged cell phone
  2. a flashlight
  3. a battery-operated clock
  4. extra batteries
  5. a manual can opener
  6. a supply of bottled water
  7. a battery-operated radio

web_SMUDWhat to do if your power goes out
Check to see if the lights are out in neighboring homes–if they are, you’re likely part of a larger outage. Please call our toll-free outage line at 1-888-456-SMUD (7683).
You can also visit our outage map to learn more about outages in your area.

What to do if you see a downed power line
If you see a downed power line:

  • Call 1-888-456-SMUD (7683) or 911 immediately.
  • Assume the line is “energized.” Stay away and warn others to do the same.
  • Do not remove fallen tree limbs or other debris from power lines. Tree limbs and other objects can conduct electricity that can shock anyone coming in contact with them.

How we determine the priority of our efforts
Our first priority is the safety of our crews and the public. A very close second is restoring power to our customers as quickly as possible.
We will work to resolve outages as soon as high winds subside, with the following order of priority:

  1. Public safety hazards (power lines down, poles down, etc.)
  2. Hospitals and critical flood control pumps
  3. Areas with large numbers of customers out of power
  4. Areas with smaller numbers of customers out of power

While significant weather events such as the coming storm can sometimes make it difficult for us to restore power to customers as quickly as we would like, we are prepared to work around the clock to get the power back on as soon as possible. We appreciate your cooperation and your patience during the days ahead.
