RIO LINDA, CA – Last week, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors approved a balanced $8.9 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year. As your County Supervisor representing Rio Linda, my top priority was to ensure this budget protects what matters most: your safety.
What Was at Stake for Our Community
When I reviewed the first drafts of the budget, I saw proposals that were deeply concerning for our neighborhoods. They included cuts to essential services that directly impact our quality of life, such as:
- The Sheriff’s Homeless Outreach Team (HOT), which works to address homelessness issues in our community.
- The Sheriff’s Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) units, which focus on solving persistent, local crime problems.
- The District Attorney’s ability to prosecute misdemeanor crimes, which is a critical tool for maintaining law and order.
These are not just line items in a budget; they are vital boots-on-the-ground efforts. Cutting them would have sent the wrong message and compromised the safety of our neighborhoods right here in Rio Linda.
A Victory for Public Safety
I was the first member of the Board to speak out against these proposed cuts. I made it clear from the beginning that I would not support any budget that weakened our public safety.
I am proud to report that by working closely with my colleagues and county staff, we were successful. The final budget fully restores funding for the Sheriff’s HOT and POP teams and protects the District Attorney’s ability to prosecute all crimes.
My commitment is firm: I will not support any budget that defunds our Sheriff or our District Attorney. This year’s budget reflects that promise.
Better Services, No New Taxes
Beyond public safety, this budget makes responsible investments in other core services you rely on every day—without raising taxes. We are investing in:
- Fixing roads that have been neglected for far too long.
- Expanding access to mental health and substance abuse treatment.
- Making overdue, court-mandated improvements to our correctional facilities to ensure safety for everyone.
These are the fundamental, common-sense duties of good government that make a real difference in people’s lives.
My Ongoing Commitment to Rio Linda
Budgeting is about priorities, and my priority will always be you. I ran for office on a promise to bring accountability to county government and to ensure public safety is never an afterthought.
While I am proud of what we accomplished with this budget, the work is never done. In every decision, you can count on me to stand on the side of public safety, because your family’s safety is not negotiable.
