Weather Alert: Rain and High Winds Starting Today


The County, in partnership with First Step Communities, is opening a weather respite shelter due to the forecast of heavy rain and strong winds this week.

The respite center opens today, Wednesday, November 12th, at 3 p.m. and is currently scheduled to remain open until Friday, November 14th, at 10:00 a.m. Staff will continue monitoring the weather and may extend the activation if necessary.

Primary Respite Location Details

The main site activated for this weather event is:

  • Warren E. Thorton Youth Center (WETYC)
    • Address: 4000 Branch Center Road, Sacramento, Ca 95827
    • Ages: 18+ years only.
    • Available Resources:
      • Meals (snacks, water, lunch, and dinner)
      • Cots for sleeping
      • Showers & Restrooms
      • Charging stations for phones/electronics
      • Light Case Management

A second respite location at the Outreach and Engagement Center (3615 Auburn Blvd) is also opening at 3 p.m. Wednesday, closing at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Pet Policy

Pets are welcome at WETYC, but strict rules apply:

  • Limit of 1 pet per person or 2 pets per couple.
  • Pets must be crated at all times inside the shelter.
  • Pets must be leashed outside around the site.
  • Crates, leashes, and dog/cat food will be provided.

  • Before You Go: Anyone needing the respite center should call 2-1-1 to check the current capacity before traveling to the shelter.

Wind Advisory in Effect

A The National Westher Service has issued a Wind Advisory, in effect for the Sacramento Valley and surrounding areas:

  • When: From 10 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) until 1 p.m. Thursday, November 13th, PST.
  • What to Expect: Southerly winds of 15 to 25 mph are forecast, with gusts up to 35 to 50 mph expected. The strongest winds are anticipated Thursday morning.
  • Potential Impacts: Gusty winds may blow around unsecured outdoor objects, cause tree limbs to fall, and could lead to a few power outages.

Precautionary Actions:

  • Secure all outdoor objects (trash cans, furniture, etc.).
  • Use extra caution when driving, especially in high-profile vehicles, as the strong winds will make driving difficult.
