A tragic incident occurred in Rio Linda on Sunday afternoon when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train.

The incident took place around 1:19 p.m. approximately a half-mile from the intersection of West Elkhorn Boulevard and East Levee Road. The location is situated within the mostly industrial area of Rio Linda at Straugh Road.

According to a Sacramento Bee report, the train, traveling southbound toward Sacramento, collided with the individual who was on the tracks. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

Fortunately, no members of the train crew sustained injuries.

Union Pacific police are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim in the coming days.
