Morning Brief for Friday January 31 2020
743 M Street

Good morning! Here’s what’s happening in Rio Linda news today.

  • KOVR-13 is reporting what began with a neighborhood complaint about a problem house led to the landlord’s conviction Monday on 16 felony counts of fraud, forgery, and conspiracy. Raghvendra “Raj” Singh, 57, faces up to 13 years in state prison when he’s sentenced March 13. Singh has a long history of buying properties and allowing them to become a nuisance – then suing anyone who challenges his bad behavior. A recent example is a house at 6136 Demonte Way in Elk Grove, which neighbors say became a magnet for drug use and prostitution.

Yet another local absentee slumlord, Singh owned the property at 743 M Street, more commonly known as the original location of Rio Java. On February 7th, after years of complaints from local residents, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department was seen finally helping the occupants to vacate the property.

  • The Sacramento Bee is reporting that a Sacramento County jury has found a man guilty of first-degree murder for setting fire to an abandoned North Highlands manufactured home and burning a Rio Linda woman alive. Along with the murder charge, William H. Thomas was convicted of arson in the death of 28-year-old Aryanna Doyle, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Rio Linda Online reported on this on May 18 2018.
