Another Fatal Hit and Run in Rio Linda

The California Highway Patrol says a man in his 30’s was hit and killed early Monday morning by a car on Elkhorn Boulevard near 20th street, in front of the New Life Christian Center church.

CHP Officer Reuben Franklin said “We could immediately tell from his injuries that it was a hit-and-run – he was dead when we arrived.”

Officers say the man had been in the road for a few hours before their arrival at 4am.

The man has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Samuel Melgoza, 30, of North Highlands. Cause of death is listed on the web site as hit and run.

This is the third fatal hit and run event in Rio Linda in the last six months.

  • In June, Kathy Ann Anthon was struck and killed while riding her bicycle on Dry Creek Road. A suspect has not been found.
  • In October, Tobias Carlile was struck and killed while walking his bicycle on Elkhorn Blvd near 14th street. A suspect has not been found.
  • Additionally, in February, Austin Whidden, 10 years old, was struck and sustained major injuries while crossing the crosswalk at the bike trail. A suspect has not been found.
