Highway 99 at Elverta Road Interchange Completed

200x200The completion of the State Route 99 at Elverta Road Interchange project was celebrated with a County Transportation Department ribbon cutting event. The construction of a new interchange replaced an at-grade signalized intersection.

“This new interchange will improve the commute in the area for everyone,” said Scott Worth, Senior Civil Engineer with Transportation and Project Manager. “Because the project replaced a traffic signal formerly at the intersection, all motorists and commercial traffic, such as big-rig trucks, will benefit.  Vehicles passing through new interchange are now spared the lengthy process of stopping and starting if caught by a red light, which also helps improve air quality. We delivered the project eight months early and on budget, an excellent outcome for a much needed project.”

Speakers at the grand opening included Assemblymember Roger Dickinson, County Supervisor Phil Serna, Caltrans Deputy Director Jeff Pulverman and Director of County Transportation Mike Penrose

The project also employed more than 610 people during the past sixteen months: a substantial economic benefit that complements the enhanced convenience and safety associated with the new interchange.  Major elements include:

  • Construction of a new interchange with ramp meters and HOV by-pass lanes on all freeway on-ramps.
  • Widening and reconstructing approximately 1 mile of Elverta Road.
  • Removal of traffic signal at the intersection of State Route 99 and Elverta Road.
  • Two new traffic signals at the intersections of the highway off-ramps and Elverta Road.
  • Addition of bicycle lanes and sidewalks.
  • Relocation of existing drainage canals.
  • Addition of drought tolerant landscaping in the four quadrants of the interchange.

The construction contract was $17.9 million, with funding provided by the Proposition 1B State Route 99 Bond program and Sacramento County Transportation Development Fees.  Teichert Construction was awarded contract work at the May 8, 2012 Board of Supervisors meeting.
