Sacramento Area Creeks Council Receives Clean-Up Grant

The Department of Water Resources (DWR) has announced the selection of eight beneficiaries for its 2023-24 Watershed Stewardship and Educational Grant program. This initiative aims to support projects in local communities and schools that contribute to protecting, restoring, or improving waterways in Sacramento County’s unincorporated areas.

For over two decades, DWR has been funding a variety of projects. These include organizing trash cleanup events, establishing eco-friendly landscapes, arranging educational field trips about the Sacramento watershed, conducting water quality studies, and producing informational materials to educate the public on preventing pollution.

The awarded projects are scheduled to be carried out from the present until the end of May. Among this year’s recipients is the Sacramento Area Creeks Council, which has partnered with the River City Waterway Alliance. They plan to organize eight cleanup events in different locations within the Unincorporated County region. These cleanups not only aim to prevent litter from polluting local water bodies but also offer educational and volunteer opportunities for community members. It’s estimated that these events will help remove between 8,000 to 80,000 pounds of trash and debris from local waterways. The Council has been granted $2,500 for this initiative.

Individuals interested in future grant opportunities are encouraged to visit the Watershed Stewardship and Education Grants webpage for the latest information.

For detailed information about these grants and the application process, Jeanette Huddleston can be contacted at (916) 874-4711.
